Marvel may not have a director for Ant-Man, but a project that is very far in the future has found its director. Horror director Scott Derrickson has been hired to helm Doctor Strange.
The Doctor Strange film has long been rumored as a part of Marvel’s Phase Three, which will kick off after Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. Now, those rumors are confirmed with reports that Derrickson was picked.
Variety first reported the news. Derrickson then tweeted, “My next movie will be STRANGE,” with a photo of himself holding an issue of the Doctor Strange comic.
Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Stan Lee and Stephen Broussard are executive producers on Strange. Marvel chief Kevin Feige is producing.
Marvel has not cast the title character and there is no shortlist at the moment, Variety notes. An announcement should come in a few months, though. Variety also reported that talks with Derrickson are in the very early stages, but a deal is expected soon. Considering that Derrickson already announced he would do it on Twitter, he sounds very excited to tackle the supernatural character.
Derrickson has become a Hollywood darling, with an ability to produce super-cheap horror films with huge returns. His The Exorcism of Emily Rose made $144 million worldwide and his follow-up, Sinister, was also a big hit. Both cost under $20 million to make.
He has a new film, Deliver Us From Evil, which is set to open on July 2. It stars Eric Bana and Olivia Munn.

There’s no release date set for Strange, but if it is part of Marvel’s third phase, it won’t be out until after 2015. Age of Ultron opens on May 1, 2015.
