A Detroit-area man and his girlfriend set out on a cross-country road trip but when she died during the trip, he continued the journey.
According to the Associated Press, Ray Tomlinson, 62, said that his 31-year-old girlfriend passed away in his vehicle during the drive from Arizona to Michigan
Tomlinson told the Detroit Free Press that after he and his elderly mother, who was also on the trip, found the woman unresponsive they kept on driving.
His excuse for not notifying authorities after the discovery was because he said he did not want to leave her corpse alone in an out-of-state hospital. He also said that he thought he had 48 hours to report the death.
Police have not charged him with any crime and a cause of death for the unidentified woman has not yet been determined. However, investigators believe she may have died of an overdose because she was found with an empty bottle of OxyContin.
The woman reportedly had drug and mental problems and was hospitalized for both in the past. Tomlinson said he tried to help her out and get her back on her feet.
The Michigan man said that after he realized that she was actually dead and not just sleeping, he was in denial and overcome with grief.
