On Tuesday, Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran avoided what could have been an end to his four-decade career in Congress.
According to the Associated Press, results of the state’s Republican Senate were too close to call and a runoff for the long-time senator and challenger, Chris McDaniel, is likely.
Unofficial results have the two just about neck-and-neck with no clear majority winner.
The 76-year-old Cochran is said to be well liked and respected in the Senate, but was thought to be the most vulnerable incumbent to lose to his Tea-party backed opponent.
If necessary, a runoff election will take place on June 24.
Primaries also took place in several other states on Tuesday.
The New York Times noted that in Iowa, State Sen. Joni Ernst won more than 50 percent of the vote against four opponents. In South Dakota, former Gov. Mike Rounds won the Republican nomination. And in Montana, Republican Rep. Steve Daines will face off against Democratic Sen. John Walsh.
