Singer Morrissey has been forced to cancel the rest of his U.S. tour due to an illness. A statement claims that it would brought on by his opening act’s “horrendous cold,” which she later denied.
The former Smiths frontman posted a message on his Facebook page, stating that he got a “respiratory infection” while in Miami, “and in the interest of making a full recovery, all further touring plans have been halted.”
Later, a statement was posted on the site True To You, which gives further details. It turns out that after a show on Sunday in Boston, he collapsed and was treated for an “acute fever” at Massachusetts General Hospital.
The statement goes on to suggest that he may have contracted the illness from Kristeen Young, Morrissey’s opening act. After their Miami show on May 31, she allegedly told the touring company that she had “a horrendous cold.” She was then asked to skip a few shows, but decided to leave the tour completely.
According to Spin, in a now-deleted Facebook post, Young denied admitting to having a cold. She said she was asked to leave the tour and didn’t do so voluntarily.
Morrissey is set to release his first studio album since 2009, World Peace Is None Of Your Business, on July 15. He was scheduled to perform nine more tour dates and it is not known if they will be rescheduled at a later date.
