The First Wives Club is heading to Broadway.
The First Wives Club, a 1996 comedy film, is getting revitalized in a new musical adaptation. The musical opens in Chicago at the Oriental Theater next spring, and from there, it hopes to make its next stop on the Broadway stage for the 2015-2016 season.
The comedy is about three ex-wives seeking revenge on their powerful ex-husbands for dumping them in exchange for new and improved trophy wives. The trio takes on the men by storm, with plenty of comical scenes ensuing from their antics.
The musical version is based not only on the film, but also on the Olivia Goldsmith novel of the same name which inspired the film, reported EntertainmentWise. The musical features music from hit songwriters Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, the names behind hits like “Stop in the Name of Love” and “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch).”
The writer of the musical, Emmy Award-nominee Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, is excited to breathe new life into the story, hoping to use it to combat “Kardashian culture.”
“I so wanted an opportunity to do a show that stands as an antidote to the Kardashian culture. I like to say about this that we’re promoting big mouths instead of big asses,” Bloodworth-Thomason told seattlepi.com.
The musical has yet to be cast for its debut.
