It is an a cappella dream come true for Pitch Perfect fans as the music singing group Pentatonix has just announced their casting into the a cappella sequel due in theatres in 2015.
Entertainment Weekly broke the news that the 5 member group will be performing in the film as a rival show choir to the Barden Bellas, the all female group which won the national championship at the end of the first film. Pentatonix rose to fame following its win of NBC’s show The Sing Off and have gone on to produce albums and special music videos via Youtube.
The band spent only one day on set in Louisiana where they were able to mix their song into their own “sound” despite the members playing characters and not themselves. Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan, Kirstie Maldonado, and Kevin Olusola spent 12 hours getting the full treatment with hair, makeup and wardrobe and then filmed their shots and were on their way.
All of this was possible thanks to two people: Deke Sharon, who produced music for both The Sing Off and Pitch Perfect and a film publicist who was able to have Pentatonix perform at the movies original premiere in 2012. Fans via Twitter definitely helped as well in the process.
Yet some of the groups fondest memories may be from having cast members such as Anna Kendrick and Skylar Astin approach them, telling them how large fans they are of the group. “It’s just crazy to think that Pentatonix has developed this following where celebrities know who we are,” says Scott Hoying when looking back on the experience.
While the film has yet to have an official release date, it is expected to be in theatres come 2015.
