What does Iron Man do on his days off? Make a movie with Robert Duvall. The first trailer for The Judge, in which Robert Downey Jr. trades in the armor for a suit, has hit the web.

Downey Jr. stars in the film as a hotshot lawyer who defends wealthy criminals, since the innocent ones can’t afford him. When he learns that his mother has died, he goes back home to visit his father, a small-town judge played by Duvall. It turns out that they have a rocky relationship, which makes it hard for Downey to defend his father after he is accused of murder. Billy Bob Thornton appears as the prosecutor, who has vowed to put Duvall behind bars.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Downey Jr. said that Duvall’s character, Joseph Palmer, is considered a major figure in the small-town community.

“Every community has one, and every family has either heard of or been under that kind of patriarchy,” the actor said. “It’s this very American story. But it’s also a story about family, and reconciliation, and law, and justice.”

In addition to Thornton, the supporting cast includes Vera Farmiga, Vincent D’Onofrio, Melissa Leo, and Leighton Meester.

The Judge is set to open on Oct. 10 and was directed by David Dobkin. It was written by Nick Schenk with a screenplay by Bill Dubuque.
