On Tuesday, Dennis Kneier resigned from his position as mayor of San Marino due to disgrace caused when the mayor was caught on tape throwing dog poop on his neighbor’s property.

A little more than a week ago, Kneier’s neighbor Phillip Lao discovered a bag of dog poop on his walkway and, checking his surveillance video, recognized the mayor as the culprit. Lao gave the surveillance video to the San Marino police when he reported the incident and the incident eventually went viral as reported by the Pasadena Star-News.

Though the mayor apologized for his action and is planning to pay the fine for littering, he is very aware of the public backlash and is therefore leaving his position.

In a statement to NBC News Los Angeles Kneier stated, “It’s caused embarrassment to the city, and as a result that affects my ability to lead the council and I thought it would be the very best thing, for the city, for us to move forward and have a reorganization and have a new mayor.”
