The Shirley wildfire in California is beginning to threaten 1,000 homes located close to the Sequoia National Park.
Several communities on the outskirts of Bakersfield were evacuated on Monday as the fire has burned three buildings as well as about three square miles of forested land, according to Reuters. The Forest Service said that two of the buildings appeared to have previously been abandoned.
There have been no injuries reported as more than 1,100 firefighters are currently trying to contain the blaze, which has grown thanks to the drought and high winds. Only about 10 percent of the Shirley fire is currently contained.
NBC News reports that only 33 evacuees have shown up at a Lake Isabella Red Cross shelter as the fire continues to fight containment thanks to the winds.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced that Bakersfield, which is 40 miles from the fire, is currently under an air quality alert due to the heavy smoke in the area.
