Sony Pictures is working on a film version of Sonic The Hedgehog, the iconic SEGA video game franchise. It is not clear when the film is coming out, but it is all part of a new effort to get the character back in the minds of the public.
The production will be produced by Sony with SEGA SAMMY Group’s CG studio Mazra Animation Planet, TheWrap reports. The studios said that the film will be part live action with computer generated characters.
Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are writing the script, with Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz producing. Marza's Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi are co-producing and Toby Ascher is executive producer.
Sonic the movie will feature everyone’s favorite speedy hedgehog battling it out with the evil Dr. Eggman. Hopefully, Sonic will get some help from Tails and Knuckles.
“There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base,” Columbia Pictures President of Production Hannah Minghella said in a statement. “Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.”
No release date has been set, but SEGA has been busy getting the Sonic character back out there in other media aside from video games. A new animated series is set to premiere this year and the characters recently got a facelift for the series.
Sonic has remained popular for over 20 decades, with total sales of games exceeding $1 billion. Over 140 million games have been sold.
