While it is common knowledge that sitting too much and watching too much television is not good for you, a new study states that it can actually increase your chances of getting colon and endometrial cancers.

For this new study, researchers studied 43 previous studies focused on the link between sitting and tens of thousands of forms of cancer, as reported by CBSNews.com

The positive conclusion from this study is that sitting does not cause all types of cancer and there appeared to be no correlation between sitting and ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and various other cancers. Unfortunately, sitting does seem to increase your chances of getting colon or endometrial cancer. According to the study, there was a 24 percent increase in the risk for colon cancer between the subject who sat the most and the one who sat the least. There was also a 32 percent increased risk of endometrial cancer between the women in the study who sat the most versus the least.

For both these cancers, the percentage of risk jumped even higher when researchers looked at time spent watching television. People who spent the most time watching television had a 54 percent increased risk of colon cancer compared to those who watched the least, and there was 66 percent increased risk of endometrial cancer for the women who watched the most TV in the study, according to CBSNews.com.

What caused this dramatic jump? Daniela Schmid, who works at the University of Regensburg and worked on this study, provided an explanation for the boost in risk. “TV viewing is often accompanied by unhealthy food consumption and smoking, which pose risks of cancer,” Schmid stated, as reported by Reuters.

This study was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
