A Sudanese woman who drew international headlines after she was sentenced to death for not renouncing her Christian faith has been freed, her attorneys announced Monday.
According to the New York Daily News, state media reported that Meriam Yehya Ibrahim’s death sentence was canceled by the Court of Cassation in Khartoum.
CNN noted that in May, the 27-year-old was convicted of apostasy and sentenced to death by hanging. At the time, the court also convicted her of adultery and sentenced her to 100 lashes. Ibrahim was eight months pregnant at the time.
She gave birth to her daughter while in prison.
Ibrahim, who is married to Catholic U.S. citizen Daniel Wani, has been reunited with her husband.
After international pressure, officials said that they were working on her release.
Ibrahim’s mother was Orthodox and her father was Muslim. Even though her father left when she was a child and she was raised Christian, under Sharia law, she was considered to be Muslim because of her father.
