A special education teacher’s aide in a Los Angeles-area school allegedly had a major breakdown on Monday that sent students and staff running to get away from her.
According to CBSLA.com, police were called to the Van Nuys Elementary School around 8:40 a.m. after Linda Hovanec allegedly assaulted students and other employees.
KTLA reported that witnesses saw the aide bang on classroom doors, throw papers in the air and climbed on top of a furniture.
“[She had] gone in the classroom and had just kinda lost control and started throwing furniture around and throwing them at students and teachers and those were some of the injuries received,” said LAPD Capt. Ivan Minsal.
Police said that Hovanec suffers from a mental illness and during the alleged episode confessed that she did not take her medication. It is unclear at this time if she did in fact have a psychiatric condition and if the school was made aware of it.
The woman was charged for assault with a deadly weapon.
The school district informed parents that she will not be returning to the elementary school.
