Thailand has been under the oppression of the junta, or the Thai military rulers. Public protests of more than five people are banned all together. So the people have hit the streets in a silent revolt: the three-finger salute.
The salute, first used in Bangkok, is the Thai people’s symbol of rebellion against the military rule. Authorities have ordered that the salute be lowered, or else they will arrest those guilty.
“At this point we are monitoring the movement,” Col. Weerachon Sukhondhapatipak told the Associated Press. “If it is an obvious form of resistance, than we have to control it so it doesn’t cause any disorder in the country.”

But Thailand’s revolt via references doesn’t stop there. BBC correspondent Jonah Fisher posted on twitter a picture of a banner near Thailand’s Terminal 21 shopping center, which dawned a tribute to Orwell’s 1984.

The junta wants to see an end to the three-finger symbol of rebellion. One can utter not a word and still be arrested for protesting. As the Asia director at Human Rights Watch, Brian Adams, told the Associated Press, “The Thai military's assault on basic human rights has apparently grown to not only target peaceful protesters but now also silent ones as well - since now just holding up an arm with a three-finger salute is enough to earn the junta's ire."
