Sorry Tom Cruise, the top weekend box office spot will almost guaranteed go to either newcomer The Fault In Our Stars or to Angelina Jolie's Maleficent.
Projections ahead of Thursday night previews of the two new wide release films give TFIOS the edge over science fiction action thriller Edge of Tomorrow, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The top spot will be a competitive battle between Shailene Woodley and Jolie, but likely will come down to which film can attract older female moviegoers, since the new film is expected to draw in the under-25 crowd looking for new fare. Both films will likely gross over $30 million for the weekend.
That's not exactly great news for the decently-reviewed Edge of Tomorrow, which wasn't exactly cheap to film. The latest Cruise offering is expected to earn about $25 million on the weekend, which is a bit of a soft start for the science fiction film, which cost more than $178 million.
The film did debut last week overseas in 28 different territories to decent enough numbers, reports Deadline. Edge of Tomorrow has grossed about $33 million since opening, with $20.1 million coming during the weekend.
The film did manage to set an opening record for a Warner Bros. film on Wednesday in Korea, with a $3.8 million gross.
