Tom Cruise is still an international superstar, so while Edge of Tomorrow may not have made blockbuster money in the U.S., the film’s overseas gross more than made up for it. Back home, the film faltered behind The Fault In Our Stars.

The science-fiction hit has scored $82 million internationally, plus $29.1 million domestically. As Variety points out, the film scored Cruise’s best opening in China, with $25 million. That’s even more than Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Edge of Tomorrow cost Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow $178 million to make. However, those overseas numbers make the low opening in the U.S. easier to take.

“People love Tom Cruise internationally and they love this kind of film,” Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of international distribution at Warner Bros. told Variety.

Back home, Fox’s Fault was the top movie, as fans of the John Green book jumped at the chance to see it on the big screen with Shailene Woodley as the star. According to Box Office Mojo, the film made $48 million, with 82 percent of the audience being female and 79 percent were under 25. It took a 53 percent dive from Friday to Saturday though, which is huge and doesn’t spell long-term success for the film in theaters.

Meanwhile, Maleficent fell 52 percent from last weekend, adding $33.5 million, which was enough to top Edge.

X-Men: Days of Future Past took a steep tumble in its third weekend, making $14.7 million. A Million Ways To Die in the West tumbled too, grossing 7.2 million. Clearly, Seth MacFarlane’s second film isn’t going to go down as a big hit, like Ted was.
