The Tony Awards are going to drop two categories at next year's award show. The sound design awards will be left behind.

AP reported that the Tony Awards Administration Committee held a meeting on June 11 in which it decided to eliminate the Best Sound Design of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Musical awards. The Tonys will now only feature 25 awards next year.

Brian Ronan was the last to win the award for musical sound design for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and Steven Canyon Kennedy was the last to win the award for sound design of a play for Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill.

According to the committee, sound designers may still be honored at the Tony Awards. The committee may choose to recognize an outstanding sound designer for a special award. No reason for the decision to get rid of these awards was given, The Hollywood Reporter added.

This year's 68th annual Tony Awards featured Hugh Jackman hosting and the big winners of the night included Bryan Cranston, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessie Mueller, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Audra McDonald for her role in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill.
