Top Ten Orange is the New Black Season 1 Moments

Orange is the New Black charmed audiences last year with the tale of Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a well-off woman who finds herself serving time in prison for a crime she committed 10 years prior.

The show follows Piper as she navigates her way through prison life, with a few missteps along the way. Like pissing off the head cook and falling back into old patterns with her ex-girlfriend, Alex (Laura Prepon), who helped put her in prison in the first place.

Orange is the New Black is a Netflix original series and all thirteen episodes of Season 1 were uploaded in full to the website on July 11th of last year.

Orange is the New Black garnered a lot of positive attention, from critics and viewers alike. Schilling was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Lead Actress and the show itself wom a GLAAD Media Award for outstanding comedy. For the upcoming Critics’ Choice Awards, it’s up for Best Comedy Series and three of its leads—Uzo Aduba, Kate Mulgrew, and Laverne Cox—are nominated as well.

Good news for fans of the show: it has officially been renewed for a third season. And the second season hasn’t even aired yet!

In honor of Season 2 of itOrange is the New Black, which premieres on Netflix on June 6th, we’re bringing you the Top Ten moments of Season 1. Let us know in the comments some of your favorite moments from the series so far.

10) Attempted Baptism

When Pennsatucky tries to baptize Chapman it could have turned a bit wonky. Instead, this moment was less preachy than anticipated and actually kind of sweet. She wasn’t trying to convince anyone of why atheism is better, in fact, she says she would probably be happier if she did believe.

9) Lesbian Request Denied

Healy is one of those bone-chilling characters who says things that make you want to set things on fire. Yet sometimes the bigotry and ignorance he spews is so hilariously horrible that you can’t help but laugh. Like this.

8) Chocolate and Vanilla Swirl

One of the best parts about this is that Uzo Aduba, who plays Suzanne or “Crazy Eyes,” came up with it herself. It is equal parts creepy and funny. It’s also Suzanne in a nutshell: she is always upfront about her desires and her feelings. She has a slightly naïve yet totally genuine approach to life and the people in it. If she sometimes goes overboard, well, at least she means well.

7) The Christmas Pageant

This was another one of those completely joyful moments, which are so few and far between. It’s so nice to see these characters excited about something, especially performing. And it’s Christmas! What could possibly go wrong?

6) John Leaves Gum for Day

Although there are all sorts of messed up power dynamics depicted on the show, John and Daya actually seem to find love in this seemingly hopeless place. This was a sweet, simple moment that showed how they’re thinking of each other and actively trying to make each other happy.

5) White People Politics

Taystee and Poussey have a wonderful friendship. They seem to understand and sincerely care about one another. And when they play off of each other they could give Fry and Laurie a run for their money in terms of comedic compatibility. Also their take on white people was pretty on point.

4) Red Wants to Absorb the Chicken’s Powers

This whole entire episode was a trip down bizarre lane. Sure, things happen in jail, but we never expected one of those things to be all of the inmates engaging in a full-on hunt for a lone chicken that is believed to have wandered into the prison. This line is definitely one of the reasons Red is one of the best characters.

[ new page = Piper’s Speech ]

3) Piper’s Speech to the Convicts-to-be

When a bunch of teenagers are sent to the prison to make them understand where they could potentially end up, the ladies are enlisted to try and scare them straight. None of their attempts seem to work except Piper’s who tells Deana, the girl in the wheelchair, that the scariest part of jail isn’t everyone else, it’s facing up to yourself. When everyone tells her what she said was cold, she responds with “Bitches gots to learn.”

[ new page = The Bobble-head ]

2) Sophia eats the Bobblehead

This one is one of the more poignant moments of the series so far and that’s saying a lot given the emotional rollercoaster that was Season 1. When the prison decides to give Sophia transgender woman, a lower dose of her hormones, she is justifiably scared and angry. Many viewers see this as a triumphant moment and while she did stand up for her rights, which is extremely admirable, she shouldn’t have had to in the first place.

[ new page = The Dance-along ]

1) The Dance-along

There aren’t many lighthearted moments in this season, so this particular one was a huge breath of fresh air. In particular, seeing this diverse group of women on TV dancing around and enjoying themselves was a joy to behold.
