Ukraine president Petro Poroshenko has ordered that its eastern border be blocked off from Russia as part of his 14 point peace plan that he will reveal Friday, which attempts to end violence between Russia and Ukraine. Poroshenko spoke with Russian president Vladimir Putin via phone Thursday and both have reached an agreement that peace needs to be established through a ceasefire peace plan.
According to CNN, Ukraine officials have successfully closed its eastern border, prohibiting access to and from Russia, in response to heated interactions with Russian troops. Along with closing the border, the peace plan also calls for modifications to Ukraine’s constitution in order to de-centralize power. The plan will also give amnesty to those who have been captured but did not commit serious crimes and those who wish to leave Ukraine and disarm will be allowed to do so.
Violence has continued to worsen over the past few months; NATO reported that Thursday Russia filled its border with soldiers, striving to intimidate Ukraine.
Violence also erupted in Ukraine Thursday between pro-Russia separatists and the Ukrainian government causing 300 separatists to be killed and seven Ukrainian officials, Reuters noted, according to USA Today.
Poroshenko also is demanding that military operations in regions such as Donestsk, be halted. He plans to unveil his 14 point peace plan later Friday.
