29-year-old James Brown randomly shot fire out of his vehicle Friday night on and killed 17-year-old Mark Rodriguez. When police Officer Brian Jones, 35, responded to the incident, Brown fatally shot him with a high-powered rifle from the doorway of his home. Brown then died during a struggle with another police officer.

CBS News CBS News reports that Brown was seen randomly firing a gun from a red vehicle as he drove Southbound on Chesapeake Boulevard around 11 p.m. One of the bullets struck and killed 17-year-old Mark Rodriguez in his vehicle, who died of injuries at the scene.

Brown continued firing his weapon randomly and police receive several 911 calls. 35-year-old police Officer Brian Jones found Brown’s vehicle near his home in the 7400 block of Wellington Road. Brown fired a high-powered weapon from inside his home and struck Officer Jones several times. Jones died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Hampton Roads News Hampton Roads News reports that Norfolk Police Chief Michael Goldsmith said, “He’s trained, he responded, he did everything he was supposed to do. My heart foes out to the family, my heart goes out to anybody that worked with him.”

28-year-old Curtis Allison, an off-duty officer, came to assist Jones at the scene. He was shot while trying to assist Jones, but has been treated and is expected to make a full recovery.

Brown fled from the scene and crashed into another vehicle. He then fought with and tried to disarm a police officer. The officer then shot and killed Brown.
