Directed by newcomer director Jeremy Snead and executively produced by Zach Braff, the star of Scrubs, Video Games: The Movie has recently had its rights acquired by Variance films, a subset division of Amplify.
According to Game Informer , the film will analyze the video game industry from its roots of arcade cabinets and large computers to the modern era of console wars and online distribution.
The film will be narrated by Goonies and Lord of the Rings’ star Sean Astin, and features industry greats like Cliff Bleszinski (creator of Gears of War), Hideo Kojima (the creative director of the Metal Gear Solid series), as well as some game-playing celebrities like Star Trek’s Wil Wheaton and Braff himself. Bleszinski will also produce.
As Snead noted to the The Hollywood Reporter, "Games are a part of the human experience and permeate our culture now more than ever before. I'm thrilled that my film will expose the world to a never-before-told story of the men and women who built this industry, as well as what it has become and what it will continue to evolve into, and I’m thrilled to be partnering with Variance to bring it out to the world."
The studio has announced that the film will be released into Canadian and American theaters on July 18th, but will be digitally released three days earlier on July 15th.
