Alex Kurtzman, who was already producing the reboot of Universal's The Mummy, will now also direct the film.
Kurtzman will produce with Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel, according to The Hollywood Reporter, who first reported the news. Bobby Cohen will executive produce.
Little is known about the plot of the reboot other than it will be set in the present, not feature any of the previous characters and will be an action-adventure film with horror elements. The script was worked on by Jon Spaihts, as well as Kurtzman and his former writing partner Roberto Orci.
"Over the course of developing The Mummy, Alex has demonstrated such clarity and passion about this character and muthology," Jeff Kirschenbaum, production co-president, said. "He knows why The Mummy has fascinated us for so long and how to bring that into an inventive, incredible new adventure."
As previously announced earlier in July, Universal revealed that they are planning on rebooting all their classic monster movie franchises, with Kurtzman and Morgan helping oversee.
Universal was reportedly looking to create a movie universe where The Mummy existed alongside Dracula, the Wolfman, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Frankenstein's monster.
