A musical based on Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho and the cult film based on it, is finally coming home. After debuting in London last winter, a production is set to open off-Broadway.
Second Stage Theater executives announced Monday that they will produce American Psycho, which will start in February. Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) wrote the music and lyrics, while the book was penned by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark).
“We’re going to put a bit more ‘psycho’ in the text and production, a little more horror and suspense,” Aguirre-Sacasa told The New York Times. In addition to his own changes, Sheik will add a few more songs.
“And there will be a lot more BLOOD!!!” Second Stage artistic director Carole Rothman added.
The U.K. production opened with Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Patrick Bateman, the main character in Ellis’ book and the film. Rupert Goold directed that production and will return for the U.S. edition.
American Psycho, which has had a long journey to the stage, is actually the first Ellis novel to make the transition. Casting for the American production will be announced soon.
The film version was released in 2000 and starred Christian Bale as Patrick, the deadly investment banker and Huey Lewis & The News fan. It was directed by Mary Harron.
