Benedict Cumberbatch has certainly found a place in geekdom with a role in Star Trek Into Darkness and lending his voice to Smaug in the Hobbit films. But for some reason, the only thing that could finally bring him to the San Diego Comic-Con was... Dreamworks Animation’s Penguins of Madagascar.
Cumberbatch voices a wolf named Classified, so he joked about learning how to live like a wolf to prepare for the role.
“You have to go undercover for a long time. I worked in Yellowstone Park as a wolf for a while, I was accepted by a band and things got hairy -- no pun intended -- when I became the alpha male,” the Sherlock star joked with moderator Craig Ferguson, notes HitFix. “About a month into it I realized that two other wolves were Christian Bale and Daniel Day-Lewis.”
Later, one fan teared up just thinking about trying to ask him a question. “I'll try not to cry,” she said. “We'll cry together,” he replied.
Ferguson was there to make sure that Cumberbatch talked about Penguins more than anything else. “Any questions at the end of this about Sherlock, Comic-Con is canceled,” he joked, reports Vulture.
Cumberbatch also caught up with MTV News during the convention and told the site that his commitments to a London production of Hamlet would keep him from playing Doctor Strange for Marvel.
Penguins opens in November.
