It was AMC’s turn at the Television Critics Association Press Tour on Friday in Beverly Hills, which means that Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan took the stage to take questions on his new venture, Better Call Saul.
Gilligan did confirm that the series will at least begin several years before Breaking Bad. According to Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that the show will start in 2002, six years before Breaking Bad started in 2008. “I hesitate to say it, but it is indeed a period piece,” he said.
He also confirmed that the series’ timeline could be jumping around. Like Breaking Bad, the story won’t be completely linear.
Interestingly, Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman will not start out as Saul Goodman. Instead, Better Call Saul will be about how Jimmy McGill becomes our favorite lawyer.
Variety reports that co-creator Peter Gould confirmed that Michael McKean will play Chuck, Saul’s brother.
“We have these two comedy legends working together,” Gould said. “[McKean is] playing Saul’s brother. He’s one of the main characters we’ve introduced. He’s just a tremendous performer and he also answers questions about Spinal Tap.”
The rest of the main cast includes Rhea Seehorn as Kim, Breaking Bad vet Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut, Patrick Fabian as Hamlin and Michael Mando as Nacho.
Better Call Saul will not start until 2015, although it was originally expected to start before the end of 2014. Still, AMC is confident in the series and it already secured a second season.
