Burger King has released a “Gay Pride Burger” for San Francisco’s 44th gay pride celebration and parade last weekend.
The marketing, according to The Associated Press, is for Burger King to push for meaningful relationships with its customers.
The Whopper, dubbed The Proud Whopper, comes wrapped in a rainbow wrapper with “We are all the same inside” written on it, according to USA Today.
Today was the last day that The Proud Whopper would be sold at the Burger King on Market Street in San Francisco.
Burger King released a YouTube video on Wednesday morning talking about the Proud Whopper.
"It showcases who we are as a brand," says Fernando Machado, senior vice president of global brand management at Burger King. "It shows how we, as a brand, believe in self-expression." The inspiration behind the new burger is Burger King’s recently tweaked slogan: “Be Your Way.”
It costs the same as a normal Whopper and customers have seen that the only difference is the rainbow wrapping. All Proud Whopper sandwich sales, Machado says, will be donated to the Burger King McLamore Foundation which go to scholarships that will benefit LGBT seniors graduating in spring 2015 from high school.
The wrappers have already become collectibles. "Customers were folding the wrappers and taking them home with them," Machado says. We’ll probably see them on Ebay soon.
