A man in San Diego chose to attempt a carjacking and became the subject of a violent encounter after some bystanders heard the victims’ cries.

According to KGTV, the suspect who attempted the carjacking has been identified as Ismael Hernandez.

The 21-year-old jumped into a van in a parking lot on Sunday afternoon and tried to drive away while a woman and her daughter were inside the vehicle.

Bystanders in the area heard the victims yelling and rushed to their aid.

A patron inside a nearby Mexican restaurant came outside and began recording the whole incident on his cell phone.

The video shows a group of men pulling the suspect from the vehicle and forcing him onto the ground. Hernandez tries to resist, squirm and get away, but the bystanders overpower him and keep him down until the San Diego police arrived and hauled him off to jail.

The victims inside the car were not injured.
