Carrie Underwood will be back to sing the opener for NBC’s Sunday Night Football every week to end your weekend, but the song will be a bit different. The peacock network and the country music superstar hit the refresh button and the filming of the new intro will be seen in movie theaters.
During the TV Critics Association press tour over the weekend, SNF coordinating producer Fred Gaudelli confirmed that Underwood will be back and filmed a new version of “Waiting All Day For Sunday Night.” San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and a few other players also appear in the intro.
According to Rolling Stone, Gaudelli said that the featurette on filming the new intro will be in theaters starting July 25.
“As you can see, the players had a great time,” he told reporters after screening a clip. “We were out here for five days. We shot the open for the regular season. We shot the open for Super Bowl XLIX, which will also star Carrie.”
NBC and Underwood have a long relationship, which may seem a bit strange. After all, she shot to fame by winning American Idol on rival Fox. That didn’t stop them from casting her in The Sound of Music Live.
Speaking of The Sound of Music, although the production got tepid reviews from critics, the special did earn four Emmy nominations last week. The live broadcast is up for Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special; Outstanding Music Direction; Outstanding Special Class Program; and Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Special.
“Waiting All Day For Sunday Night” is based on Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself For Loving You” and was previously performed by Pink and Faith Hill.
