It turns out that audiences didn’t care to see Cameron Diaz’s critically drubbed Sex Tape. The new comedy failed to draw audiences on a weak weekend for Hollywood, with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes winning again.
Dawn dropped 50 percent from its previous weekend, which isn’t that bad considering the record for blockbusters this summer. The film’s strong reviews have certainly helped and it made $36 million, notes Box Office Mojo. So far, Dawn’s domestic total is at $139 million.
The No. 2 film of the weekend was The Purge: Anarchy, a sequel to last year’s surprise low-budget horror hit. Although the film only cost Universal $9 million to make, the studio shouldn’t be happy with Anarchy’s $28.4 million opening weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this is lower than the $34.1 million The Purge had last year.
“The way things have been going, I'm glad we did more than $20 million. It's a much more complicated marketplace than when the first Purge opened,” Universal domestic distribution president Nikki Rocco told THR.
Planes: Fire & Rescue scored just $18 million for Disney this weekend. It’s a sequel to last year’s Cars spin-off Planes. That film, originally planned as a direct-to-video project, was another surprise hit for Disney, making $22 million.
And now we hit the worst news of the weekend. Sex Tape, which also stars Jason Segel, was a complete disappointment, only making $15 million. Critics have hated it and the audience that saw it wasn’t happy either, only giving it a C+ CinemaScore grade.
Transformers: Age of Extinction added $10 million.
