There have been rumors for months that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson may finally get his wish to be in a superhero movie, but nothing has been confirmed. However, Johnson himself may have let something slip in a new interview.
The Hercules star told TotalFilm that he and DC Comics are about to make an announcement soon, perhaps at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend.
“I will say this. There’s a character out there that we’re going to announce very soon that I’m going to play, and I’ll just say this…this character has the power of Superman, he can throw down,” Johnson said, notes Screenrant. “Just say the word. That’s all I’m going to say.”
Now, the only character in the DC universe that has the strength of Superman is Captain Marvel, star of the Shazam! stories. In those books, a young Billy Batson becomes a superhero when he yells the magic word, “Shazam!” Throughout the character’s history, he has had several encounters with Superman and they often involve testing each others’ strength.
Shazam! is supposedly coming out in summer 2016 - just after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - which would mean that DC has to make an announcement soon if that’s still the plan.
Johnson will be seen in Hercules, which opens this weekend.
