Ed Sheeran snagged his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 music chart with his latest album X for the week ending June 29.
The British singer debuted atop the chart with 210,000 sold copies of his sophomore effort according to numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, Billboard reports.
The sales number is good enough to give Sheeran the best first week for a pop album so far in 2014. It also puts him behind only Coldplay's Ghost Stories, Eric Church's The Outsiders and Brantley Gilbert's Just As I Am for best overall debut of the year.
In the second spot was Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour, which sold another 67,000 copies, according to Reuters. With Sheeran and Smith in the top two spots, respectively, it is the first time more than 20 years that two British singers were atop the Billboard 200.
The last two soloists to pull off that feat were Sting and Eric Clapton in 1993.
The new album from G-Eazy, These Things Happen, opened in the third spot with 46,000 copies sold. Ultraviolence from manufactured pop star Lana Del Rey slipped to No. 4 with 44,000 and the Frozen soundtrack rounded out the top five with another 38,000 sold copies.
