Fabien Cousteau, grandson of Jacques-Yves Cousteau spent 31 days under water.
Fabien has broken his grandfather’s record of 30 days under water for his documentary World Without Sun, according to News Tonight Africa. This mission is the longest that has been taken so far in the Aquarius habitat.
The habitat in which Cousteau lived in for 31 days is located 63 feet below the surface. It is equipped with hot water, air conditioning, a mini fridge and a microwave.
Cousteau and his colleagues had to undergo 16 hours of decompression before emerging on the surface. Even though they went through decompression, Cousteau still felt the affect of sunlight and fresh air immediately.
Cousteau and his crew were able to collect two years worth of data in the month that they were under water. They also successfully deployed a monitoring system to observe the effect of ocean acidification on the reefs.
For Cousteau, the main goal of this expedition was to reach as many people as possible with the knowledge that he and his crew gained, according to Miami Herald.
Cousteau’s grandfather devoted his life to understanding the world’s oceans.
"This expedition's main goal was to reach as many people around the world to impassion future generations to care about the oceans, to cherish them, to be curious about them in a way that existed during my grandfather's era", said Cousteau.
