A strong storm ripped through a Virginia campsite on Thursday killing two people and leaving more than 25 others with injuries.
The Cherrystone Family Camping Resort, located in Cape Charles, was pelted with large pieces of hail, plenty of rain and heavy winds that knocked over RVs and damaged trees. More than 1,300 people were at the campsite during the storm.
According to The New York Times, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning shortly ahead of the storm smashing into the campsite, but have since said they aren't sure there was an actual tornado yet.
Those who suffered injuries, among them several children, were taken to the Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital for treatment. Hospital officials say that many who were admitted had broken bones or head injuries.
"All hell broke loose," one camper, Joe Colony, told The Associated Press. "We got an emergency message on a cellphone and within 30 seconds, the thing hit and it blew down 40, 50 trees in the park."
Some took refuge in the campers, but they offered little protection from the storm as camper Joe Micucci said about five campers were flipped over in the storm, with winds taking one away and leaving only the wheels.
The storm also flipped over some boats off the coast, with the Coast Guard having rescued three people already, spokesman Petty Officer 3rd Class David Weydert said.
