While the first film adaption of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy is not to be released in theaters until next February, producers are reportedly making moves to get the second adaption rolling.
Universal Pictures has been stingy on the promotional side of the first Fifty Shades flick, though the company is gearing up to begin the very early stages of preproduction to adapt the second novel in the series penned by British newbie author, E.L. James. According to The Tracking Board, producers have begun searching for a screenwriter to draft a script. Therefore writer Kelly Marcel will not return as screenwriter for the second film.
However, just because Universal is currently looking to start drafting a script does not mean the film will ever make it through to production. The first movie has yet to hit theaters, and how well Fifty Shades of Grey fares in the box office this winter will determine whether or not Fifty Shades Freed will make it to the big screen.
The Tracking Board also reports that cast members have yet to sign on to return for the second film, though producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are already on board.
Meanwhile, author E.L. James announced that the first trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey will be released later this month.
Universal’s interest in penning the second film before the release of the first means one thing: execs believe Fifty Shades will almost guarantee big numbers at the box office in 2015. The amount of hype surrounding James’ trilogy points to record-breaking figures, much like the wild success of The Twilight Saga.
