Former Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets general manager Frank Cashen is dead. Cashen died at Memorial Hospital in Easton, Maryland. He was 88 years old, and was diagnosed with a short illness at his untimely death.
According to the Associated Press, Cashen was a sports writer for a long time in his hometown of Baltimore. After his days as a writer, he went to law school. Becoming the Orioles general manager happened after his law school days.
He then went on to be a general manager for the New York Mets. Players such as Darryl Strawberry respected Frank Cashen. Strawberry understood that Cahsen was the Mets leader during his playing days in New York, and he cherished what he brought to that ball club. The talented roster Cashen assembled allowed young and old players at the time to mesh together nicely.
"Frank was our leader. I always admired the way he put together our team. He mixed young guys, like me and Doc, with guys like Carter and Hernandez. He was able to find the perfect blend to build a championship,” Strawberry said, reported by the Associated Press.
He had many great years with the Mets. During Cashen’s final eight season as the Mets general manager, his team had the best record in baseball having 743 wins and 550 losses, published by ESPN.
