On Wednesday, New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin was sentenced to 10 years in prison for corruption.
"He started out as a rock star and he ended up as just another crass, corrupt politician," said University of New Orleans Political Science Professor Ed Chervenak, according to the Associated Press of the former cable television manager turned mayor.
Nagin, 58, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday for bribery, money laundering, fraud and tax violations. His conviction in February included 20 counts. Prosecutors were hoping for a sentence of 20 years.
Nagin will face federal prison next. It’s likely that if the recommendation from Judge Helen Berrigan is followed, Nagin will serve his term at a minimum security federal lockup in Oakdale, Louisiana. He is scheduled to attend a Sept. 8 reporting date. According to Reuters, Nagin could be eligible to get out of prison after 8 1/2 years.
Other political figures are also in that Oakdale prison. U.S. Rep William Jefferson is serving a term there. Former Gov. Edwin Edwards served some of his sentence there before answering to corruption charges, according to The Times Picayne.
