Legendary Films confirmed at San Diego Comic Con today that Godzilla 2 will be happening, and will not only be helmed by the first film’s director, Gareth Edwards, but will feature three of Godzilla’s most famous rivals, including Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah.

As io9 points out, these three monsters, along with the King of Kaijus himself, form the same line-up as the 1964 Toho film Ghidrah, The Three-Headed Monster, which required that Godzilla team up with Mothra and Rodan to defeat the massive and powerful Ghidorah.

As reported by MTV News, Gareth Edwards sent a video message from San Francisco while he was working on a spin-off for film Star Wars: Episode VII that we reported he was working on. He thanked the fans for their support of the film, noting that the film’s success meant that “we get to make another one. First, we genuinely need a break from all the pressure of doing a major franchise and all the fanboy opinions that go along with that.”

MTV News also noted that Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull confirmed that Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah will be featured in the film, and showcased concept art for the monsters.

Tull emphatically noted, “Now we have more monsters to play with and we’re excited about it.”

This sentement, The Verge reports, was confirmed by Legendary’s Twitter feed, which confirmed that they had gained the rights for "several other classic monsters from Toho" who will be featured in "future franchise installments."

The panel closed with a video that showed the silhouettes of the monsters, government footage, and a voice over by John F. Kennedy calling for emergency protocols. The video closed with a title card that read: “Conflict: Inevitable. Let them fight.”

There is no set release date for the film. It is also unknown if characters from the first film, such as Ken Watanabe’s (pictured above) Dr. Daisuke Serizawa, will return.
