How do you get people to want to see the same movie they’ve seen countless times over the past 30 years? Remind them how cool it would be to see it on the big screen. That’s exactly what Sony is trying to do to get fans of Ghostbusters back in theaters.
On Thursday, Sony released a short trailer to promote the 30th anniversary screenings of the iconic 1984 comedy, which will be back in theaters for Labor Day weekend. The trailer doesn’t quite make it look like a modern silly comedy, perhaps because the movie needs no further explanation. It is already known as one of the comedies of the past three decades.
Last month, Sony outlined its big promotional push to get people thinking about Slimer, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and the jokes again. Not only will the film be released in theaters, but another Blu-ray edition will be out. The studio is also finally bringing the sequel out on Blu-ray.
Ghostbusters was directed by Ivan Reitman and written by the late Harold Ramis and Dan Akroyd, who both star, along with Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver. Sony will re-release the film in 700 theaters for a week, beginning on Labor Day weekend.
