With his FX series, The Strain, premiering on July 13, Guillermo del Toro has a lot on his plate but he’s not done there. He is also working on the movie Crimson Peak and has hopes that one day he could bring H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness to the big screen. However busy he may seem, del Toro hasn’t forgotten about his 2013 hit Pacific Rim. The writer/director is already brainstorming ideas for the squeal along with other Pacific Rim projects which include a graphic novel and an animated series.

Legendary Pictures has already announced that Pacific Rim 2 has a release date of April 7th 2017. Recently, del Toro sat down with Wall Street Jornal where he said that Pacific Rim’s sequel will be “very different” from the first one. Del Toro didn’t say much more about the movie squeal afraid of spoiling too much. However, it’s still enough to get fans excited.
Pacific Rim isn’t getting just a sequel either. An animated series is in the works along with more comics from Travis Beachman’s graphic novel, Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero, according to Screen Rant. The animated series will create more back story and will be looked at as a prequel.
All this hype surrounding del Toro’s Pacific Rim may be just what the franchise needs to become bigger. The animated series will come out about year before Pacific Rim 2 hits theaters in 2017.
