One person was killed on Thursday when a gunman entered the Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Philadelphia and shot two employees in an office room.
Delaware County District Attorney JackWhelan said that a doctor fired back at the gunman and managed to critically injure him, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
The shooting occurred in the psychiatric wing of the hospital and a female caseworker was shot and killed, while the psychiatrist, identified as Lee Silverman, managed to hit the suspect, Richard Plotts, three times. Silverman suffered a graze wound to his head.
"This is a tragic event for our hospital and for our community, and we are praying for the safety of the victims," the hospital said in a statement. "We are grateful for the efforts of the emergency responders."
According to MyFoxPhilly, another worker, who called 911, said they heard loud arguing in the office ahead of the shooting.
Officials say that Plotts had mental health issues and is currently undergoing surgery after Silverman critically injured the man.
