Jake Gyllenhaal has been getting back on track with taking serious roles and Nightcrawler continues the best streak of his career. It’s been nearly a decade since he was last nominated for an Oscar and it looks like he’s begging for another with this new movie.
Nightcrawler’s promotional machine started with an actual Craigslist ad for his character, Louis Bloom (a reference to The Producers or Ulysses?), who is looking to become a journalist covering nights.
“My name is Louis Bloom,” the listing reads. “I'm looking for full-time employment. No job too big or too small. I have my own car and phone. Persistent, punctual, polite and hardworking. Will work nights.”
A link to the first footage from the film was also included. It is his resume and a pitch, introducing us to Louis’ mantra, “If you want to win the lottery, you have to make the money to buy a ticket.”
On Thursday, Open Road Films posted the first full trailer, which lasts a minute and a half. In it, we see just how dedicated Louis is to his job as a reporter. But is Louis actually interested in being a journalist or is he happy because he works at night?
Nightcrawler is opening in October and also stars Bill Paxton, Renee Russo and Ann Cusack. It was written and directed by Dan Gilroy, who wrote The Bourne Legacy.
