James Gunn will reportedly return to the director's chair for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and will also write the script.

The news was revealed by Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman who spoke with TheWrap. Gunn has also previously indicated he would be interesting in returning, should the film do well.

Marvel has no commented, nor even announced that GOTG will for sure get a sequel, but positive early ticket sales tracking suggest it likely will happen.

"They started to figure it out pretty quick when they started getting the reactions from the audience; it was a very positive reaction," Perlman said. "Of course they would want to make a sequel as long as it does well and people are excited about it; they'll wanna do a sequel. So, it's going to happen."

And she added, "James will be directing 'Guardians 2,' so he would also be writing 'Guardians 2,'" but wouldn't confirm she would be back to help write.

Though Marvel might not have decided on whether the film will get a sequel, it's possible the studio is also penciling it in for a future date just in case. Six dates were announced last week. The dates stretch from 2017 through 2019 and no movies have been slotted in just yet. Thor 3 and Avengers 3 will almost certainly take two, but that leaves four other slots that a GOTG could be placed without rushing it through production.

Guardians of the Galaxy, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, is out in theaters on Aug. 1.
