With his latest project Boyhood set to theaters across the country throughout the next few weeks, director Richard Linklater is moving on to his next project, a remake of the 1964 film The Incredible Mr. Limpet. Although still in the casting phase, it looks like things are going swimmingly so far, as Jon Hamm, Keegan Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Sarah Silverman and Kevin Hart have joined Zach Galifiankis in the cast.
TheWrap reported the recent updates on the remake. For some time, Galifiankis has been attached to play the title character Larry Limpet, but Hamm is looking to play the human villain, a businessman who's company mines the ocean floor. McBride and Silverman, meanwhile, are in talks to play human characters as well. The other cast members, however, including Key & Peele, Gad and Hart, are going to lending their voices to the sea creatures.
Directing a script based on the novel by Theodore Pratt, Linklater is making a project that Warner Bros. has been trying to bring to the screen for the past two decades. Although rumored for the film several years back, he officially joined the movie earlier this year, after directors like Steve Oedekerk and Brad Bird were once linked to the project at various points in time.
Linklater's Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly collaborators Femke Wolting and Tommy Pallota will be helping with the movie's animation, which suggests that the movie will not likely be in line with your average animated movie.
Should this all come together, it should make for an interesting film. That is, if Linklater is making the movie after all. In a recent interview with Rope of Silicon, he suggests that this is not his next movie, as, when he is asked about the movie, he states, "Yeah, I don't think that's happening... You know, studios, eh, they're so full of s**t, you know, it's just, nothing, nothing." Maybe something changed? Regardless, whether Linklater does it or not, it looks like this movie will be made by somebody.
