For a couple months, Legendary has placed a mystery film on their 2016 roster, but didn't reveal a peep about what that movie could possibly be. Some speculated that it was going to be a Namor: The Sub-Mariner movie, while others thought it was any variety of things.
But, at the end of their Comic-Con panel today, studio head Thomas Tull revealed that that said secret project is actually prequel to King Kong, titled Skull Island.
As Deadline dispels, after showcasing monsters for Godzilla 2 and teasers for Warcraft and Guillermo Del Toro's Crimson Peak, Tull made the surprise revelation about the film, then proceeded to show a brief teaser trailer for the new movie. The teaser didn't showcase much, just brief images of a restless ocean, rocks and other material on a deserted island and the shadow and roar of the beloved giant ape, but it was enough to get the mouths watering of fans in Hall H.
The trailer was started by Tull stating "We have been tinkering around with one thing," before the trailer played and the title card Skull Island appeared on the screen, according to MTV.
According to a press release for the movie released shortly after this announcement, it was revealed that the movie would be roaring its way into theaters on November 4, 2016. More details should come out about this project eventually, but for now this announcement should get fans excited to see King Kong on the big screen once again.
