Legendary Films has announced that Skull Island, a previously unannounced film featuring King Kong, is in the works.
As reported by MTV News, the panel – which included looks at Sam Raimi’s Warcraft, Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak, Michael Mann’s Blackhat, and a confirmation of Godzilla 2 – ended with Legendary CEO Thomas Tull (pictured above) saying “We have been tinkering around with one thing” before showing a clip featuring a shot from a raging ocean, through a dense jungle, and finally upon the famous gargantuan gorilla as he stepped out of the shadows.
The clip featured a voiceover, which stated the haunting words: “Being alone in the wilderness, it had gone mad. It looked at you with a vengeful aspect.”
The film, simply called Skull Island, will detail the history and ecosystem of the home of Kong. It is slated to release on November 4, 2016, but has not announced a director, writer, or any cast. The last film to feature Kong was Peter Jackson’s King Kong in 2005, which was also released by Legendary, but, as Variety notes, Skull Island will not be a sequel or reboot to Jackson’s film.
Legendary wants the film to “take audiences deeper inside the rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.” Legendary believes that the location has only been seen as a backdrop before, and wants to make the location a character in its own right.
