There were a total of 295 people aboard. The Flight 17 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, according to the Associated Press. The airplane was a Boeing 777. It crashed near the Ukrainian city of Donetsk. The Ukraine said that Russia took an active role in the ongoing struggle in Donetsk, an area in the Ukraine.
The exact location of the crash was in Torez, near Shakhtersk, 40 km (25 miles) from the Russia border. Local residents found wreckage. Investigations have been ordered by authorities, who are attempting to find out if the plane was shot down.

Malysian Airlines MH370 disappeared while en route to Kuala Lumpur in March. The ongoing search for that airline has not been resolved.
