While Chris Hemsworth will get to keep his job in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, at least for a few more movies, the comic book Thor is undergoing a major change. Marvel announced on The View this morning that Thor will be a woman.
According to the ABC talk show, Marvel has decided that the male Thor is “no longer worthy” of using Mjolnir, the hammer. So, the Asgardian god will now be portrayed by a woman.
“This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before,” Thor writer Jason Aaron said in a statement.
Marvel Editor Wil Moss said that it is now time to update Mjolnir’s inscription, which currently reads, “Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.”
“The new Thor continues Marvel's proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more,” Moss continued. “And this new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute - she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”
Thor will now be Marvel’s eighth series featuring a main female hero as the headliner. She will make her debut in a brand new Thor comic, written by Aaron and drawn by Russell Dauterman.
