Marvel Animation Studios announced at their San Diego Comic Con Panel that a new show based on the Guardians of the Galaxy is in the works.

The panel features a one-minute trailer, featuring characters from James Gunn’s upcoming movie, including Rocket Raccoon and Star Lord. Given the promotional images and, as Entertainment Weekly notes, Marvel’s penchant for having synergy across it’s media properties, the lineup of the team will most likely mirror Gunn’s picks for the team.

The show will join the growing list of Marvel’s animated shows, including Avengers Assemble, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors. As Entertainment Weekly notes, new seasons for these shows will premiere this fall, although the premiere date for The Guardians of the Galaxy has not been announced or set. As We Got This Covered notes, the film will also premiere on Disney XD, despite its darker art design.

As we have reported, Gunn’s film currently has an early buzz of positive reviews, and Marvel is clearly banking on the IP’s success.

The rumors of the show have been around, ScreenCrush notes, since January, but have not been confirmed until today. The film will keep fans of the property interested until the film’s sequel, which, as we reported, will also be written and directed by James Gunn (pictured above).

ScreenCrush noted that this is not the first time the Guardians have been presented in an animated form, since they made their first appearance in episodes of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Ultimate Spider-Man, the latter of which an appearance by Michael Clarke Duncan as Groot.
