Mel Gibson’s role in Max Mad , and the sequels that followed gave the late 70’s and 80’s something to rave about. Now, the new remake, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, is going to give 2015 a nice kick.

Mad Max: Fury Road has been up in the air since 2003 when production began. After nine years of planning, the idea finally began to materialize in 2012 when filming began, reported Polygon.

The director for the film, George Miller, also directed the earlier versions of Mad Max. Miller also intends to recreate the sequels of the franchise with Tom Hardy taking over Mel Gibson’s role.

In 2000, Miller wanted Mel Gibson alongside him to reboot the film. Gibson was willing, but their plans were halted.

“We were setting it up and then when 9/11 happened, the American dollar crashed against the Australian dollar and in one day we lost about 20% of our budget,” Miller said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

When things didn’t work out with Gibson, Hardy walked into Miller’s life. Instantly, Miller felt a click with the actor, leading to Hardy’s role as Mad Max.

The film is set to be released on May 15, 2015.
