Netflix hit series Orange is the New Black is on a hot streak. Critically acclaimed, the Emmy Nominated dark comedy is known for its sharp wit and its variety of characters, some of who are garbed in orange prison uniforms. This last fashion feature has unintentionally caused a change in the uniforms at Saginaw County Jail, as the Sheriff reverts back to past black and white uniforms.
As the popularity of Orange is the New Black and other prison shows has increased, Michigan Sheriff William Federspiel noticed an increase in everyday wearing the color orange, with a juror even once wearing all orange to a trial. Explaining his decision to change back to black and white, Federspiel told Reuters that, “it was an easy decision. It was a cost savings and it breaks away from that cultural coolness. It's not cool to be an inmate of the Saginaw County Jail."
Jailhouse uniforms are relatively cheap. The items, which can last for two to three years are about $11.73 each as reported by the Associated Press.
